What is By-Product Synergy?
By-Product Synergy (BPS) is defined as the practice of matching under-valued waste or by-product streams with potential users, helping to create new revenues or savings for the organizations involved while simultaneously reducing environmental burdens. BPS is related to other concepts including industrial ecology, industrial symbiosis, and cradle-to-cradle manufacturing.
Ohio By-Product Synergy NetworkThe Ohio By-Product Synergy (BPS) Network was launched in October 2009 to help businesses convert wastes into profits while creating environmental and economic benefits for communities in the region. The Network is led by Sustainable Ohio, in collaboration with the Center for Resilience at The Ohio State University, the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) and other Ohio organizations. Other BPS networks have developed in Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, Mobile, New England, New Orleans and Puget Sound Region. What benefits does the Network provide?Joining the Network helps members to realize some of these benefits: Four Keys to Success• Diversity: Members represent a wide variety of industries, broadening the markets in which they can find by-product synergy opportunities. Joining the NetworkEligibility: The Network is open to any company or other organization in the Ohio region that wishes to explore opportunities to (a) transform waste materials into byproducts, or (b) secure recycled material streams in place of virgin feed stocks.
